Install the Revit Plugin
- 1Download the installer from the download card at vdcplugins.com/plugins/3d-grid-placer.
- 2Close Revit if it's open.
- 3Run the installer, ticking the Revit versions you want it installed for.
- 4Start Revit. You'll see a new VDC Plugins tab in the ribbon.
The installer covers Revit 2025 and 2026. The 3D grid family ships inside the plugin — there is nothing extra to load into your template.

Place Your 3D Grids
The plugin reads grids from whichever model you point it at, then places one 3D grid line per grid, per level. The dialog stays open while you work, so you can keep using Revit.
- 1Open your Revit project. If your grids live in a linked model, make sure that link is loaded — unloaded links won't appear as a source.
- 2Go to the VDC Plugins tab, open the 3D Tools panel, and click 3D Grids.
- 3Your web browser will open — sign in with the email you used to subscribe, then return to Revit.
- 4Pick a Grid Source: the current model, or any loaded Revit link.
- 5Pick the 3D Grid Family. The bundled 3D GRID family loads itself the first time you run the command, and is preselected for you.
- 6Tick the Levels you want grids on. Levels with no match in your model are flagged will create — the plugin adds them for you.
- 7Adjust the options if you need to. Create a family type per level and Skip grids already placed on a level are on by default, and Flip grid line direction reverses which way the grid heads point.
- 8Click Run. If any levels are about to be created you'll get a confirmation listing them first — nothing is written until you accept.
- 9Read the results window: it reports how many grid lines were placed and skipped, and shows how each source level mapped to a level in your model.
Everything happens in a single transaction named "Place 3D Grids" — one undo reverses the whole run, and if anything fails the run rolls back cleanly rather than leaving a half-placed model.
Troubleshooting
Levels the plugin creates get no floor or ceiling plan views — add those yourself if you need them. Curved grids are skipped, since a 3D grid line is straight. And if a linked model is rotated out of horizontal, the plugin stops rather than guess at level elevations.
